VISTA - Billy Chapman Lewis, 74, son of Albert Chapman Lewis and Tevis Thelma Grubbs, died Friday, May 14, 2004, at his home, of complications from his long bout with pulmonary fibrosis.

Born June 5, 1929, in Garfield, Ga., he lived in Vista since 1955. He retired after 24 years in the U.S. Marine Corps as a Chief Warrant Officer-2, having served during WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and was a business tax auditor for the California State Board of Equalization for 17 years.  He was also active in his church, teaching Sunday School and serving as head usher.  He also wrote two books on the genealogy of the Lewis family, and an autobiography.

Mr. Lewis is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jane O. Lewis of Vista; daughters Linda S. White of Darlington, Ind., and Deborah A. Lewis of Long Beach; stepson Roger W. Johnson of Crawfordsville, Ind.; brother Robert L. Lewis of Harlem, Ga.; sister Betty Butler of Jacksonville, Fla.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The graveside service with military honors was 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 20, at Riverside National Cemetery, with the Rev. Tim Poldrugo officiating.  The grave is located in section 49A, grave #3487.
